Introduction: Stopping the Twist

Rafters fail. The compression flange under heavy load want to twist laterally. We call it Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB). If the rafter twist, the whole roof drop. How to stop it? Flange brace. 1. The Rafter Lateral Torsional Buckling Restraint

Primary frame beam carry massive weight. During extreme wind uplift, the bottom flange is in compression. The inner flange want to kick out sideways violently. The flange brace connect this compression flange directly to the roof purlin web. It lock the frame. Twist is impossible.

2. Flange Brace Angle 50×50 64×64 Selection

Do not cut random scrap steel on site. Steel frame flange brace calculation dictate the exact profile. Check the fabrication length (B).

  • 300mm ≤ B ≤ 1540mm: Use L50x50x2.5 angle (Part No. 0810275).

  • 1540mm < B ≤ 2390mm: Upgrade immediately to L64x64x2.5 angle (Part No. 0810276). The installation angle (θ) must sit strictly between 30° and 60°. 45° is perfect. Outside this angle, force transfer fail completely.

3. PEB Corner Brace Design Formula

Fabricator must cut the angle perfect. Follow this math.

  • X = (A - tf) + 40mm (If you use 165 purlins, change to +45mm)

  • Z = Y - 61.5mm (Select Y from standard modulus table, ensure Y > X)

  • C = sqrt(X² + Z²)

  • Fabrication Length B = C + 155mm Flange brace angle and bolt spacing must match the CNC punch hole on the purlin web. No field drilling!

4. The Non-Modular Asymmetry Trap

Architect make non-modular frame. Left side and right side spacing is different. Worker cut the same length for double flange brace. Wrong! Left and right side MUST calculate independently. You install wrong length brace? You bend the purlin before roof even finish. Buy exact engineered parts wholesale. Save labor. Save the building.
