Round Bar Wind Bracing Connections: Bevel Washers vs Clevis Pins in Steel Buildings

Introduction: Tension Load Transfer

Round steel brace rods handle tension. Apply compression, they buckle instantly. The connection node must transfer pure diagonal tension forces into the rafter and column webs. Zero local bending moments allowed. Bending snaps the threaded rod ends. In PEB engineering, we dictate two standardized connection systems. Detail BC101 (Bevel Washer) and Detail BC102 (Forged Clevis Pin).

1. The BC101 System: Bevel (Hillside) Washers

The economical standard. Fabricators cut an oversized slotted hole directly through the primary frame web. The rod passes through. The bevel washer (hillside washer) provides a flat, angled bearing surface against the web. The nut locks it tight.

  • The Advantage: Cheap. Fast installation. Tensioned directly by tightening the end nuts.

  • The Penalty: You cut a massive hole in your primary frame web. Web shear capacity drops. We strictly limit this system to smaller diameters (Max Ø27).

2. The BC102 System: Clevis Pins

Heavy-duty industrial applications demand BC102. You weld a gusset plate to the frame web. The forged U-shaped clevis connects to the gusset via a heavy steel pin and cotter pin. The rod threads directly into the back of the clevis.

  • The Advantage: Zero web penetration. The primary frame remains structurally intact. The pinned joint allows absolute articulation. Perfect force alignment. Mandatory for massive tension loads (Ø30, Ø33).

  • The Penalty: Hardware procurement costs are higher. Shop welding required for gusset plates.

3. Tensioning Logic: Turnbuckles and Thread Types

A sagging brace rod is dead weight. It offers zero wind resistance. You must tension the system. Enter the turnbuckle. To use a turnbuckle in the middle of a bracing cross, you must specify RH-LH (Right-Hand / Left-Hand) threads. Spin the turnbuckle sleeve in one direction. It pulls both rods inward simultaneously. Tension is achieved. Specify RH-RH (Right-Hand both ends) only when utilizing continuous single rods tensioned directly from the exterior column webs.
