Introduction: Maximizing Vertical Space
Industrial floor space is expensive. Double it vertically. Mezzanine and floor deck systems achieve this efficiently. However, structural safety relies entirely on connection nodes: main support columns joining secondary mezzanine beams. Standardized clip angle connections are mandatory. They allow safe shear transfer under heavy industrial live loads (3.0 to 15.0 kN/m²). A connection failure equates to a catastrophic floor collapse.
1. Connection Typology: Simple Shear (Pinned)
Rigid moment connections at these points represent a structural design error. Design mezzanine beams exclusively as simply supported members: pure vertical shear transfer and zero unwanted bending moments. We specify double clip angles fabricated from Q235B steel. The hole edge distance from the top of the angle to the first row of bolts is strictly 45 mm. For L90x90 series angles, set the slotted hole center exactly at 50 mm.
2. Web Hole Gage Formulas
Shop detailing requires mathematical precision. Use these exact gage formulas:

3. Mezzanine Beam Fabrication Length
Field cutting or fitting on-site destroys erection schedules. Calculate fabrication lengths with complete precision in the shop. Beam Fabrication Length = Clear Span Between Supports – 4.0 mm. This is the golden rule. This 4.0 mm deduction provides a 2.0 mm clearance at each end, ensuring smooth assembly, zero field modifications, and direct bolting.
