In late January 2023, a shallow Mw 5.9 earthquake struck near Khoy in the West Azerbaijan Province of northwest Iran. The disaster delivered a severe blow to the region’s commercial and residential infrastructure, destroying thousands of buildings. The crisis was heavily compounded by a brutal winter cold wave, with nighttime temperatures dropping to -15°C accompanied by heavy mountain snowstorms.

Emergency investigations revealed that unreinforced clay brick and heavy concrete block construction failed catastrophically under high-frequency horizontal ground motion. Rebuilding industrial facilities, cold storage plants, and workshops in seismically active northwest Iran demands structures engineered for critical dual performance: high seismic ductility and high-performance thermal insulation.

To prevent brittle fracture in sub-zero alpine conditions, our structural framing uses impact-tested Q345B/Q355B low-alloy structural steel, delivering verified Charpy V-notch toughness down to -20°C. The primary portal frames feature computer-optimized tapered columns and rafters connected by Grade 10.9S high-strength bolt assemblies. Under violent tectonic shaking, these bolted connections act as ductile energy-dissipating joints, flexing to absorb seismic kinetic energy while maintaining overall building alignment and preventing collapse.

In sub-zero alpine climates, the building envelope is critical to both life safety and operational viability. The insulated roof system pairs advanced thermal barrier engineering with 75mm high-rib standing seam technology. By utilizing heavy-duty galvanized thermal spacer brackets, the system seamlessly integrates high-density, fire-rated rock wool or double-layer fiberglass blankets, delivering an exceptional thermal resistance rating of up to R = 5.28 m²·K/W. This structural composite core drastically reduces internal heating energy demands while completely preventing interior condensation.

The outer weather skin is constructed from 0.6mm ferritic 445J2 or austenitic 304 stainless steel. Mechanically interlocked to 360 degrees and sealed with automated longitudinal welds, the system eliminates exposed penetrative fasteners entirely. When mountain blizzards drop massive snow loads, the elevated 75mm seam keeps panel laps safely above pooling slush and ice dams, preventing winter meltwater infiltration. Supported by sliding brackets that absorb seasonal thermal movement over a ±32 mm stroke, this system provides lasting, weather-tight protection across northwest Iran.
