How to Specify Color Coated Steel Coils (PE, SMP, HDP, PVDF) Without Overpaying

If you buy color-coated steel coils by looking only at two numbers, total thickness and RAL color, you are leaving the door wide open for spec-cutting. In the international coil trade, there is a $90-per-ton gap between a real two-coat-two-bake coil and a cheap single-coat bargain roll, even when both proforma invoices say ‘0.45mm PPGI RAL 9002.’

Same invoice line. Completely different steel.

  1. Specify BMT (Base Metal Thickness) vs TCT (Total Coated Thickness). This is the oldest trick in the steel business. If you order ‘0.45mm TCT,’ a trader can take a 0.39mm bare steel strip, add a thin zinc layer and paint, and ship it to you with a clean conscience. When you feed that thin coil into a roof roll-former, the ribs feel flimsy. Always write ‘0.45mm BMT ±0.01mm’ on the contract if you want 0.45mm of actual structural steel.
  2. Match the Paint Resin and Micron Thickness to Your Sun Exposure. Never pay for PVDF if you are stamping indoor ceiling panels, and never buy cheap PE for a desert roof. Standard Polyester (PE) at 15 to 18 microns on the top side and 5 to 7 microns on the back side works fine for indoor walls and mild climates (7 to 10 years before chalking). Silicone-Modified Polyester (SMP) and High-Durability Polyester (HDP, 20/7µm) push outdoor color life to 15+ years at a very reasonable price increase. For coastal ports, chemical plants, or scorching UV zones, specify two-coat-two-bake 70% PVDF fluorocarbon paint (20 to 25µm topcoat over a 5µm anti-rust primer) to get 20 to 25 years of fade-free service.
  3. Pick the Right Steel Hardness Grade: DX51D vs S350GD / G550. If you are using the coil to make flat sandwich wall panels or deep-bent flashings and rainwater gutters, order soft commercial-drawing steel (DX51D or CS Type B, yield strength ~240 to 300 MPa) so the metal bends 180 degrees without cracking the paint ( <= 2T to 3T bend test). If you are rolling thin, high-strength corrugated roof sheets that need to span wide purlins without denting under foot traffic, specify structural grade S350GD or full-hard G550 steel (yield strength 350 to 550 MPa).

At Hihsteel, whether we are shipping 2,600 tons of coils like our Moscow steel coil processing warehouse project or a single 25-ton trial container, every coil ships wrapped in VCI anti-rust paper, galvanized inner/outer steel sleeves, edge rings, and heavy wooden pallets.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between ‘Two-Coat Two-Bake (2C2B)’ and ‘Two-Coat One-Bake’ PPGI coils?

A: In a true 2-Coat 2-Bake line, the 5-micron epoxy/PU primer is rolled on and oven-cured first, and then the 15 to 20 micron topcoat is rolled on and baked in a second oven. Cheap ‘2-coat 1-bake’ lines wet-stack the paint and cure once, resulting in pinholes and poor paint adhesion during roll-forming.

Q: What do ‘Top 20µm / Back 7µm’ paint specs mean on a color-coated coil sheet?

A: Top 20µm means a 5µm anti-corrosion primer plus a 15µm weather topcoat on the exterior face. Back 7µm means a single 7µm epoxy or polyester wash-coat on the reverse side. If the coil will be used to laminate polyurethane or rock wool sandwich panels, specify a specialized ‘PU-foaming adhesive backer coat (7 to 10µm)’ on the reverse side so the foam bonds tightly.

Q: How do you test if the paint on a steel coil will crack when bent into roof sheets?

A: Use the T-Bend test (ASTM D4145) and the MEK Solvent Rub test. A quality PPGI/PPGL coil passes a 2T to 3T bend test (meaning the sheet can be bent 180 degrees around 2 to 3 thicknesses of itself with zero paint flaking under scotch tape) and withstands 100+ double rubs of MEK solvent without exposing the primer.

Q: What is the difference between DX51D soft steel coil and G550 full-hard steel coil?

A: DX51D is a soft, ductile lock-forming steel (yield strength ~250 to 300 MPa) ideal for sandwich panel skins, curved flashings, and deep stamping. G550 is a high-tensile full-hard steel (yield strength 550 MPa) used for thin 0.30mm to 0.48mm corrugated roof sheets that require high stiffness over wide spans.

Q: How are export steel coils packed so they don’t rust or telescope inside the container?

A: Each coil is wrapped in VCI anti-rust paper and waterproof plastic film, armored inside and out with galvanized steel sheet wrappers, locked with circular side-edge steel guards, strapped with 4 circumferential and 4 radial steel bands, and chocked onto heavy timber cradles inside a 20GP container.
